Clearwater National Forest

Hiking
Clearwater River, Clearwater National Forest
Clearwater River, Clearwater National Forest (Idaho Department of Commerce)

There are about 1,700 miles of hiking trails in the Forest. A number of easily reached trailheads are located in the White Pine Scenic Drive area, along U.S. 12 and along Road 247 adjacent to the North Fork of the Clearwater River. Before hiking any Forest trail, a check with the appropriate Ranger Station is advisable. Forest officers will be glad to help plan a hike and provide firsthand information about the area you choose to visit.

Weitas Butte, Austin Ridge, and Castle Butte Lookouts - These lookouts are no longer used for fire detection and are available for rent by the public during summer. Being able to stay in a lookout tower with a commanding view of the Forest is a unique and increasingly popular recreation experience, although not recommended for families with small children.

Elk Creek Fails - The area surrounding three waterfalls is a popular area of hiking, camping, and picnicking. There is a half-mile walk to the fails.
