Located an hour northeast of Atlanta near Gainesville is one of the South's premier reservoirs: Lake Sidney Lanier, which offers great fishing for largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass.

The state record spotted bass, an 8-pound-plus lunker, came from this scenic impoundment of the Chattahoochee River. And just a few miles to the east of this reservoir is Alltoona Lake, another bass and panfish hot spot. Besides great fishing, each of these reservoirs also offers ample public and private camping opportunities.

Two hours east of Atlanta runs the Savannah River, which is impounded three times before reaching Augusta. Great fishing for black bass, catfish and panfish is found in the Savannah River's Hartwell, Russell and Thurman Lakes. Many believe the state's best fishing for striped bass and whiterock hybrids is found in these waters.

250,000 Acres of Lake
Lakes Sinclair and Oconee are located 1.5 hours east of Atlanta. These scenic lakes offer great warmwater fishing, as do nearby little Lakes Jackson and Juliette.

Traveling northwest of Atlanta is Weiss Lake, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir that lies largely in Alabama. Always touted among the country's top crappie fisheries, Weiss is also a top-notch largemouth bass fishing lake.

West Point Lake, located 1.5 hours southwest of Atlanta on the Alabama line, is routinely rated among the country's very best largemouth bass fisheries. The leviathan catfish that prowl West Point Lake's stumpy depths are legendary.

All told, almost a quarter million acres of highly varied fishing lakes await you within a two-hour drive of downtown Atlanta.
