Caribou National Forest

Hiking

There are approximately 1,200 miles of hiking and backpacking trails. You'll find the best organized trail system in the Pocatello Ranger District.

The terrain on the Pocatello District ranges from stream bottoms with an elevation of 5,000 feet to the subalpine environment of Bonneville Mountain at 9,260 feet. Wild animals, poisonous snakes, and poisonous plants are not a major problem in the District.

The Pocatello's worthy trails include...

Boundary Trail - An existing 35-mile loop trail that passes through nearly all of the local habitat types and plant communities. The oval formed by the Boundary Trail encircles a portion of the Portneuf Mountain Range, including Mount Bonneville (9,721 feet) and Haystack Mountain (9,033 feet). The high point on the trail is 7,600 feet at Inkom Pass and the low point is 5,400 feet in Reed Canyon. The average elevation of the trail is 6,500 feet. This trail has several possible access points.

Crestline/Scout Mountain - Ten miles. Crosses an open saddle with excellent views.

Gibson Jack Creek - Located in the Pocatello Municipal Watershed. A scenic route that parallels a moderate size stream with occasional beaver dams.

West Fork of Mink Creek - Wanders along a fair-sized steam with numerous beaver ponds. No motorized vehicles.

There are many more trails in the forest. Check at the ranger district offices for more information.
