Cape Lookout is another of the barrier island parks typical of this section of the Atlantic seaboard. It is, for all purposes, a southern extension of Cape Hatteras. The seashore consists of three islands that extend more than 50 miles and offer numerous paddling opportunities.
There are four public launch sites: East Harkers Island, West Harkers Island, and two at the Beaufort Waterfront. Primitive camping is allowed without a permit, and there are no designated campgrounds. Numerous coves and inlets typify the inner shore, while long miles of straight beach are the rule on the Atlantic side.
