Mountain Bike PEI's Confederation Trail
By Bill McRae

Beautiful rolling landscapes, spacious beaches, and quaint country villages: Prince Edward Island has all the makings of an ideal biking adventure. The icing is the new Confederation Trail, a 350-kilometer (217-mile) mountain-biking trail that runs from tip to tip of the entire island province. The grades are easy, and you won't need to worry about provisioning for the trip, since the trail runs through the center of classic rural villages, where you'll find country inns, quaint shops, and coffeehouses.

It's possible to peddle from one end of the island to the other in four or five days, but popping off onto spur trails makes this ride even better. One leads to Charlottetown, a lovely town of Victorian redbrick storefronts with a bustling harbor filled with lobster boats. Others lead to quiet beaches and to Prince Edward Island National Park, which preserves a vast stretch of sandy beach as well as the Green Gables Farm, the place that inspired author L. M. Montgomery to write the Anne of Green Gables series. Let it inspire you, too.
