Hiking - Boundary Waters

Take a stab at one of the country's best hiking trails: The Superior Hiking Trail. With sweeping views of Lake Superior and the Sawtooth Mountains, cascades, waterfalls, and canyons along the path, it's a no-brainer for avid hikers. In the midst of the Voyageurs National Park—which sits with 40 percent of its area covered in water—is the Kabetogama Peninsula. Head to the Anderson Bay Overlook Trail (two miles) for some of the best views of this 75,000-acre area and Rainy Lake. Those looking for a longer trip can try Voyageurs' Cruiser Lake Trail, an almost 10-mile trail showcasing the area's geographic diversity—from high ridges to clear lakes and quiet backwater. Hit the North Shore State Trail, a continuous 146-mile multi-use trail that stretches along bluffs that overlook Lake Superior. Several entrances to the trail, which runs from Two Harbors (near Duluth) to Grand Marais, dot Highway 61. Hike Grand Portage, the 8.5-mile-long carry route once used by French explorers to transport goods from Lake Superior to Fort Charlotte for storage.
