An interesting and not so usual inventory is the one compiled for refuge wildflowers. It contains over 211 species.
The interest in plants by refuge visitors inspired Friends of Bombay Hook President Bob Mayer to win support from the refuge and friends group for a native plant garden. Because of so many questions, says Mayer, a small section of the garden is being devoted to non-native plants as well. The trail is located just outside the visitor center. One-half mile Boardwalk Trail provides a delightful walk through woodland and brackish marsh and adjacent to brackish ponds. Here is where close-up views of bird life and refuge plant life are possible. A self-guiding trail brochure is available. Parsons Point Trail is one mile long through upland and ends at the edge of Shearness Pool, one of the refuge impoundments. This trail is closed, however, November through June because it is located where eagle nesting occurs. Shorter trails lead to observation towers at each of three major freshwater impoundments.
