Black Rock Mountain State Park

Black Rock Mountain State Park, situated in the northeastern corner of the Peach State, is the area's crown jewel, with five mountains combining to make it the highest state park in Georgia, and a cool respite from the swelter of the big city. Summertime temperatures are often close to those found in New England.

Be picky about where you set up camp here. There are two distinctly different campgrounds: an RV-packed main camping area and the lesser-known tent sites. Stay away from the main site, and head to the walk-in tent site, perched on a wooded mountainside at 3,040 feet. This leveled site offers the only flat terrain in the area and one of the few comfort stations equipped with hot showers.

Black Rock is a hiker's park. Once you get your site, explore the mountain. Your first destination should be the short Ada-Hi Falls Trail, which dips into a cool cove before reaching the cool Ada-Hi cascade. The Tennessee Rock Trail peaks out at 3,640 feet, leads to a great viewpoint, and is an ideal place to catch the sunset. There is also a 7.2-mile backcountry loop trail that offers a stupendous view from Lookoff Mountain.
