Hiking Big Hill Trails

Big Hill was named when the early prospectors, heading to the gold fields with wagons and teams of horses, could barely make it over the "Big Hill" when coming from Spearfish.

Elevation: 5,000 to 5,520
Location: Trailhead is approximately 7 miles south of Spearfish on 134 (Tinton Road).

Trails Length* Difficulty
Loop A 2.1 miles Easy
Loop A.1 0.5 miles Easy
Loop B 2.4 miles More Difficult
Loop C 5.5 miles More Difficult
C.1 ** 1.5 miles Easy
Loop D 4.5 miles More Difficult

* Trail lengths show the total around each loop, NOT the distance between the trailhead and the loops.

** Trail C.1 ends at 1.5 miles, overlooking the west rim of Spearfish Canyon.

Loops A, A.1 and B primarily meander through mixed stands of quaking aspen, paper birch and ponderosa pine.

During the winter season the trails are groomed in cooperation with the Northern Hills Cross Country Ski Club. Please help by contributing at the donation box at the trailhead.
