Directions: From Roswell, take Highway 285 N to Pine Lodge Road, proceed E on Pine Lodge Road approximately 9 miles to headquarters.
Primary Wildlife: Migratory waterfowl and sandhill cranes—primarily a winter resting and feeding area, great variety of wildlife.
Habitat: 24,520 acres on the northern edge of the Chihuahuan Desert changing to grass and shrub community. Refuge is located in the middle Pecos River Valley and includes playa lakes, marshes, man-made lakes, and 700 acres of cultivated crop land.
Recreation and Education: Wildlife observation and photography, self-guided auto tour, and picnicking.
Special Note: 9,620-acre Salt Creek Wilderness Area. The only known nesting area in New Mexico for the interior least tern. Designated Research Natural Area for study and research.
