As if the views of volcanoes aren't enough, the 42 Traverse, also called the Tongariro Forest Crossing, is the best hardcore two-wheel adventure on the North Island. Covering 44 kilometers of Tongariro forest, the 42 Traverse calls for average to advanced riding with river-crossing skills. The terrain is rough, mixing unused logging roads with superb descents. The route is sign-posted, but a Tongariro Forest Adventure map and compass are useful for navigation. Those without gear can rent bikes locally.
There are masses of other sensational riding routes in this area, for all skill levels. Around Taupo the views of active volcanoes Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and extinct Tongariro, plus the chance to soak in natural hot pools, and fish in serene Lake Taupo, make this a holiday paradise.
