Big South Fork National Recreation Area

Highlights

It is very rare to find such a rugged scenic area with so much to offer. The area abounds with opportunities for hiking, backpacking, paddling, horseback riding, camping, mountain biking, caving, climbing, hunting, fishing, photography, and sightseeing. Big South Fork is right next door to the Daniel Boone National Forest, which has many recreational opportunities of its own.

Some of the most outstanding sites that you would want to see are the Twin Arches, Yahoo Falls, the Chimneys on Station Camp Road, East Rim Overlook, and Charit Creek Lodge. The historic Big South Fork Train in Stearns, KY, is a delightful way to experience the area—plan on a three-hour trip through some very beautiful country (800-462-5664). Off the train, be sure to wear good hiking shoes—most of what you will see in the park will require a one- to two-mile walk.
