If you like to fish, come to the headwaters of Rock Creek, a blue ribbon trout stream, or any of the 1,000 miles of trout streams and 73 lakes within the Deerlodge National Forest boundary.
The Wisdom Ranger District contains 58 lakes; 35 of them are stocked with game fish. A great variety of fish species are found in lakes on the District; they include: brook trout, cutthroat, grayling, lake trout (Mackinaw), cutthroat/rainbow cross (hybrid), mountain whitefish, rainbow, and golden trout. Many of the small streams on the District also contain fishable populations of trout; however, the best stream and river fishing in the area is found outside the forest boundaries. Permission should be obtained from land owners before crossing private property. The Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest Lake Inventory contains useful information on lake fisheries, in terms of fish species, area, elevation, accessibility, etc. Free copies of the inventory are available from Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest offices. While the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks has responsibility for regulating and managing sport fishing, the Forest Service manages fishing habitat in the national forests. All persons 15 years and older are required to possess a current Montana fishing license.
