Directions
Baxter State Park is in north-central Maine about eighty miles north of Bangor. Take I-95 to exit 244 for ME-157 toward Millinocket/Medway. Take ME-157 northwest through Medway and East Millinocket, continuing into Millinocket, then following signs north, passing Millinocket Lake. Just over six miles from the lake, you’ll come to a fork in the road. The Baxter State Park road forks to the right. Follow it about a mile and a half to the visitor's center.

Season/Hours
Open year-round.

Major Trails
To protect wilderness resources, the park limits access to parking lots/trailheads. Access is granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Areas are closed when parking lots fill up. Early arrival is recommended for day use.

Campgrounds
There are ten campgrounds located at Roaring Brook, Abol, Katahdin Stream, Nesowadnehunk, South Branch Pond, Trout Brook Farm, Chimney Pond, Russell Pond, Daicey Pond (cabins only), and Kidney Pond (cabins only).

The campgrounds have facilities which vary; some have lean-tos, tenting space, bunkhouses, fireplaces, and picnic tables. Narrow roads prohibit travel with large trailers. Russell Pond and Chimney Pond can be reached only by foot trails. Canoes are available for rent at South Branch Pond, Russell Pond, Trout Brook Farm, Daicey Pond, and Kidney Pond. Campers and visitors supply their own food and cooking utensils. Gasoline is not available in the park, although it is available at private campgrounds on the way to the park. Be sure to check your gas gauge before entering.

Water Supplies
Water in Baxter State park is untreated and generally unprotected. It is strongly recommended that water be disinfected before drinking or cooking. You can do this a number of ways, such as boiling it for a minimum of five minutes or applying seven drops of iodine (from your first-aid kit) per gallon of water. You may substitute bleach for iodine. If you use a filter, be sure pore size is three microns or smaller.

Pets: No pets allowed.
