The Brainard Lake Recreation Area offers access to many of the trails that lead into the Indian Peaks Wilderness. During the winter, the area becomes a mecca for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing. A web of trails radiates outward from the lake, totaling some 30 miles of well-marked terrain. Rocky Mountain National Park borders the Roosevelt National Forest. Nearby towns include Estes Park, Loveland, Fort Collins, Poudre Park, Bellvue, and Walden. The forest is about a one-hour drive from Boulder, Denver and Fort Collins.
