Snowshoeing Central

The CMC North Trail was one of the first ski trails cut by the Colorado Mountain Club. It was renamed officially to honor CMC-er Harry Waldrop, who was killed in a kayaking accident on the Arkansas River. You may find references to either trail name on various maps and in different guidebooks. This companion to the CMC South Trail is slightly longer and has more ups and downs, which themselves are longer and steeper than anything you'll find on the South Trail. The trailhead is near a large sign on the right (north), about 300 yards beyond the Red Rock parking area. The trail extends westward along the north side of the Brainard Lake Road. It starts with a long downhill, then undulates through the dense woods. After one long, steady climb, you will reach a section that includes several shorter descents, a few minor ascents, and several meadow crossings, some of which are usually wind scoured. After the South St. Vrain Creek crossing, you reach a T-intersection that forms a junction with the South St. Vrain Trail and then the Brainard Lake Cut-Off Trail, which veers sharply to the left (south). This is a good place to turn around. Take the cut-off that leads to the eastern end of Brainard Lake or continue to make a circuit around the lake (see Brainard Lake Loop).

If You Want a Longer Hike

You can continue on the Waldrop Trail, which joins the St. Vrain Trail and after about 0.5 mile breaks away again at a marked trail junction. The left (south) branch is the Waldrop Trail, which continues on, passing the CMC Brainard Cabin just before reaching the road to the Mitchell Lake parking area.
