Climbing Colorado's Fourteeners

Mount Evans Routes: Crystal II
  • Class 3
  • Steep Snow (Seasonal)
  • From Summit Lake Trailhead:
    1.8 miles, 1,420 feet

This steep route is on the south side of Evans' northwest face. It is a test piece for skiers and a nifty climb. You may be able to identify the climbing route by spotting ski tracks. Climb southwest from the east end of Summit Lake into the Summit Lake Bowl, below Evans' northwest face. Crystal is a narrowing couloir south (right) of the cliffs below the summit. Start below the summit and climb south along the south side of the lower cliff band until you reach the summit cliffs on the upper end of the ramp that splits this face. This is the ramp used by the Snave Route. Escape the summit cliff by climbing south along the narrow, steep-sloped ramp and reach a small saddle and the tourist trail 100 yards south of the summit.
