Paddling Our Wild Shores

Apostle Islands National Seashore

Wisconsin

The 21 islands, and 2,500 acres of mainland, that make up the Apostles offer tremendous opportunities for sea kayakers. Because of the open water crossings, frigid lake temperatures, and potential for sudden winds, this area is not recommended for open boats. For a sea kayaker, however, it is a paddler's mecca of eroded sandstone caves, sand beaches, lighthouses, and big water.

Several launch sites dot the area. Permits are required for camping, but many sites are available (both developed and undeveloped). Many of the larger islands have hiking trails, lighthouse tours, historic sites, and boreal wildlife. Average summer winds blow at five to 20 knots and produce one- to four-foot waves. Sudden squalls can be common.
