0.0 Turnoff west (right). A turnoff south (left) at 0.5 mile leads in less than 0.2 mile to the Paroli homesite. For a picnic, it just doesn't get any better than this — a couple of tables, shade, and a peaceful setting. A sign indicates that the site was a project of the Youth Conservation Corp in 1980.
0.6 Turnoff north (left) drops down to a turnaround after 0.2 miles. A short hike north from here, over a low, rocky ridge, leads down into an east-west drainage that contains Chimney Spring (elev. 3,200'). The welcome sound of the trickling spring is heard from atop the rocky prominence. Nearby springs just north include Don, Johnnie, Rusty, and Lews. All of these, in a line with Pena Spring to the north and Bubbling Spring to the south, suggest a fault line through here. Old Culp Valley Road bears south now, passing La Cienega Spring on the west (right).
1.3 Cottonwood Spring. Large, old cottonwoods in this beautiful glade shelter the cement tank that holds water piped from the year-round spring.
3.0 The trail heading south (left) is the Wilson Trail, named for Alfred Wilson, an early-day cattleman of Ranchita, who ran cattle in Borrego Valley before the turn of the century.
3.4 Turnoff south (left) 0.3 mile to The Slab, a former foundation of a house that was made of white granite rocks and cement. It rests on a brushy knoll overlooking Grapevine Canyon.
