Nowhere does great birdwatching have a more spectacular backdrop than in Alaska. And you don't need to venture far from downtown Anchorage; go to Westchester Lagoon to see nesting red-necked grebes and shorebirds galore. The best spot, says Audubon Alaska's Lorelei Costa, is the mudflats along the two-mile stretch of the Coastal Trail just south of the lagoon.

For a more secluded experience, Costa recommends Kenai Fjords National Park, where a kayak or motorboat transports you to an avian extravaganza of species from Kittlitz's Murrelets to Bald Eagles. Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge is an eco-friendly mom-and-pop lodge (plus cabins) with glacier views so stunning you'll be showing off your photos forever. Prices start at $475 per person and include room, meals, and boat tours.
