Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge

Directions: From San Diego or Mexico take Interstate 5 to the Coronado Ave. exit. Travel west towards Imperial Beach and turn left on 3rd Street. Follow the road to the left onto Caspian Way and the entrance is on your right.

Primary Wildlife: Endangered species include California least tern, light-footed clapper rail, least bell's vireo, brown pelican, and salt marsh bird's beak plant. Provides important waterfowl and shorebird habitat.

Habitat: 1,056 acres of coastal wetland consisting of open water, tidal salt marsh, beach dunes, riparian, and upland habitats.

Recreation and Education: Wildlife observation, study, and photography. Nature walks, ocean and beach use.

Special Notes: The refuge is part of the 2,530-acre Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve. Recreation opportunities including horseback riding and ocean beach uses are provided on the State Park portion of the reserve. 378 species of birds have been recorded for the Research Reserve.
