Thunder Basin National Grassland

The Thunder Basin National Grassland is located in northeastern Wyoming in the Powder River Basin between the Bighorn Mountains and the Black Hills.

The net Forest System Lands amount to 572,211 acres distributed through five Wyoming counties. The Grassland provides unique opportunities for recreation, including hiking, sight-seeing, hunting and fishing. It abounds with wildlife, provides forage for livestock and is underlain with vast mineral resources. The Grassland ranges in elevation from 3,600 feet to 5,200 feet, and the climate is semi-add.

The Thunder Basin National Grassland does not have any developed campgrounds; however, camping is allowed. Land patterns are very complex because of the intermingled federal, state and private lands. If private access roads are used, permission must be acquired from the private owner. The Grassland is administered by the Douglas Ranger District of the Medicine Bow National Forest.
