Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery

Directions: Located about 62 miles E of Vancouver and about 4 miles W of White Salmon on the N shore of the Columbia River off Highway 14. Turn S onto Spring Creek Fish Hatchery Access Road at the entrance sign and drive 1/2 mile to parking area.

Primary Wildlife: Chinook salmon spawned in this area of the Columbia River before Bonneville Dam was built. The hatchery concentrates on capturing these returning large chinook salmon in the fall, taking their eggs, and rearing about 17 million fingerlings for release in the spring.

Recreation and Education: Visitor center with display on fisheries is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., but closed weekends from June through November. September is the best time to visit to see the large chinook salmon in the holding ponds and to see the egg stripping operation. Environmental education tours upon request.
