Shawnee Hills Scenic Byway - Illinois Scenic Drives

Get off the doldrum drive of the interstate highways! Come and explore the scenic Shawnee Hills of Illinois by touring a new motor route called "Shawnee Hills on the Ohio Scenic Byway." Located in southeastern Illinois, this 70-mile route winds and rolls its way through the state's most scenic countryside. The entire route is on hard surface roads. However, access to some attractions is by gravel roads.

Recreation & Wildlife
"Shawnee Hills on the Ohio" is the 91st scenic byway to receive national designation by the Forest Service. To receive this honor, the route must have pleasant scenery and possess plenty of natural, cultural, historical, and recreational opportunities.

Numerous interesting points dot the Byway; choose from campgrounds, lakes, and interpretive trails to historic sites and quaint Ohio River towns. You are bound to enjoy whatever you see or do. Whether it's fishing the bottomland sloughs of the Ohio River, riding horseback through the Garden of the Gods Wilderness, hiking a trail at Rim Rock, or watching boats locking through at Smithland, you'll find it along the Byway.
