Shasta-Trinity National Forests Guide: Hiking and Backpacking

Shasta-Trinity National Forests Highlights

  • Dominating the valley is 14,162-foot Mount Shasta. Day-hike trails are generally accessible on this steep, glacier-covered, living volcano from June through October, depending on snow conditions.
  • The McCloud River, about an hour north of Redding, features three waterfalls, a wildlife viewing area, and access to the Modoc Volcanic Scenic Byway. To hike to the falls, start at the Lower Falls picnic area.
  • Before hiking, drive along two scenic byways that provide spectacular views of some of California's most interesting terrain: the Trinity Scenic Byway and the Trinity Heritage Scenic Byway.
  • Take a break and dip into the chilly Shasta Lake and Clair Engle (Trinity) Lake, both of which are superb recreation spots for tired hikers to relax. There is also boating, fishing, and miles of shoreline.
  • At Castle Crags State Park, climb to the base of Castle Dome along the Crags/Indian Spring Trail. It is a 2.7-mile hike with a 2,200-foot elevation gain.
  • About 12.5 miles up Everitt Memorial Highway, you will find the trailhead to a peaceful, 1.5-mile loop that offers a great view of the mountains. Plan for approximately 45 minutes along with time to adjust to elevations of up to 7,500 to 7,900 feet.
  • Trek up Black Butte Trail and from the summit of Black Butte (6,325 feet), and you'll have a great view of Mount Shasta towering to the east and the city of Mount Shasta and the Sacramento River Canyon to the south.
