Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness

Selway River, Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness (Idaho Tourism)
Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Overview
The Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness is located in the Lolo and Bitterroot national forests in Montana and Clearwater and Nez Perce National Forests in Idaho and encompasses 9,767 acres reachable on forest roads west off of U.S. Highway 93. Lolo lands make up only a small portion of the wilderness, but excellent hiking is found along the South Fork of the Lolo Creek and on a two-day round-trip to 9,069-foot Lolo Peak. About 38 percent of this wilderness is in the Bitterroot National Forest. This portion is readily accessible from local roads along U.S. Highway 93 and the road following the Nez Perce Fork of the Bitterroot River.
Hike Lolo Pass
One-fourth of this massive wilderness area, one of the first to be designated under the Wilderness Act of 1964, lies in the Clearwater National Forest. Elevations range from 1,800 feet on the Selway and Lochsa rivers to mountain peaks as high as 8,800 feet along Bitterroot Divide. Hundreds of miles of trails are maintained through the Wilderness. Mechanized equipment, including bicycles, are not permitted in the wilderness or on trails leading into the wilderness. The natural qualities of the wilderness cannot be protected without the help of all wilderness visitors.
