Sauk River Rafting
Spring and early summer herald heavy snowmelt from the Pacific Northwest's high Cascade Mountains, turning area rivers into boiling cauldrons of rapids and whirlpools. Some of the rivers coursing thorugh Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest should only be tackled by experienced whitewater boaters or with a reputable outfitter. For something a little more mellow, though, try paddling the Sauk River, a popular spring float with one or two tricky Class III rapids that's ideal for families and beginners. The most popular section is the middle Sauk River between its confluence with the White and Suiattle rivers near Darrington. With thickly forested riverbanks and views of the Cascade foothills, it's also a beautiful day out on the water. Given the glacial source of all that water, it's also a cold river that calls for wetsuits on most days. The river runs pretty low in the late summer months, which is when many rafters hone their paddling skills in inflatable kayaks. The lower section below Darrington offers some easy Class I-II water good for novices and kids.
