Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge
Directions: From junction of State Highway 11 and 38, go south 2 miles on Highway 38, then 1 mile W to headquarters. From Jet, Oklahoma, go 13 miles N to Highway 38, then 1 mile W to headquarters.
Primary Wildlife: Wintering migratory waterfowl and critical habitat for migrating whooping cranes; shorebird migration.
Habitat: 32,000 acres consisting of salt flats, open reservoir, woodlands, and agricultural fields.
Recreation and Education: Visitor Center, wildlife observation and study, photography, fishing, digging selenite crystals, and hunting.
Special Note: Area also has bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and interior lesser terns. All are endangered species. Due to reflections from salt flats, sun protection is highly recommended.
