Salinas River Wildlife Refuge

Directions: The wildlife area is located 11 miles N of Monterey at the confluence of the Salinas River and Monterey Bay. Take the Del Monte Avenue exit from Highway 1 and drive 3/4 mile W to the parking lot.

Primary Wildlife: The endangered California brown pelican, Smith's blue butterfly and peregrine falcon use the area. The rare snowy plover nests and winters here. Resting and feeding area for waterfowl, shorebirds, and other water birds.

Habitat: 518 acres of diverse habitats including ocean, beach, dunes grassland, river, lagoon, and salt marsh.

Recreation and Education: Wildlife and wildflower observation, study, and photography. Surf fishing for striped bass, starry flounder, sand sole, surfperch, steelhead, jacksmelt, and small sharks. Waterfowl, small game, and migratory bird hunting. Hiking trails.
