Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge

DIRECTIONS TO REFUGE: From Plymouth, NC, take Newland Road (SR 1126) to Shore Drive (SR 1183), then go approximately three miles to refuge office. There is also an interpretative visitor center, the Walter B. Jones, Sr. Center for the Sounds, and boardwalk on the banks of the Scuppernong River in Columbia, off Highway 64.

ENDANGERED & THREATENED SPECIES ON THE REFUGE: The federally listed and state listed red-cockaded woodpecker, bald eagle and peregrine falcon have been observed. The red wolf has been reintroduced.

OTHER WILDLIFE SPECIES: American alligator, red and gray fox, pygmy rattlesnakes, bobcat, otter, beaver, and a variety of birds, mammals and reptiles.

HABITAT DESCRIPTION: Predominant vegetation type is southeastern shrub bog which is also known as pocosin. This type is characterized by a very dense growth of mostly broadleaf evergreen shrubs with scattered pondpine.

FOCUS ACTIVITIES: Waterfowl management on 12,000 acre Pungo Unit. Management of unique pocosin habitat. Extensive wetland restoration has begun on 19,000 acres.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PUBLIC USE: Hunting for deer, quail and rabbits, etc. Wildlife observation: tundra swans, snow geese and ducks as well as black bear and a variety of birds and animals. Interpretative walks at the Walter B. Jones, Sr. Center for the Sounds.
