Lying on the border of the provinces of Basilicata and Campania, the mountainous Cilento peninsula is one of Europe's wildest landscapes. Crisscrossed by hiking trails that lead to the summits of Monte Bulgheria (4,020 feet), Monte Alburno (5,700 feet), and other peaks, the park encompasses rugged shoreline, deep caves, and sheer rock walls more than a quarter of a mile high—enough venues to keep an outdoors enthusiast busy for weeks. Wolves from the Calabrian national parks are believed to have migrated into the Cilento, but there has been no formal confirmation. The park has no services, but the southern coastal city of Sapri is a good place to reintroduce yourself to civilization once you leave its borders.
