Overflow National Wildlife Refuge

Overflow National Wildlife Refuge is a vital bottomland hardwood area in eastern Arkansas.

Overflow is managed primarily for wintering and resident waterfowl, shore and wading birds and other neotropical migrants, endangered species and indigenous wildlife. Spectacular concentrations of waterfowl, often more than 100,000 birds, winter on the area.

Overflow provides a variety of public use opportunities including hunting, trapping, wildlife observation, photography, environmental education and other outreach efforts.

Primary management activities include moist soils/croplands management, water management through a series of impoundments, a 4,000-acre greentree reservoir and a sound forest management program to enhance benefits to wildlife.

Opportunities for Public Use: Trails, fishing, wildlife observation, photography, hunting - including youth hunts, environmental education and interpretation, camping.

  • Located in Ashley, Bradley, and Union County, AR.
  • Location: The refuge is located 5 miles west of Crossett, AR on Highway 82.
  • Natural History:
  • Felsenthal is the world's largest green-tree reservoir consisting of the 15,000-acre Felsenthal Pool that is more than doubled to 36,000 acres during winter flooding.
  • Open water: 15,000 acres, bottomland hardwood: 40,000 acres and uplands: 10,000 acres.
