Directions: From Muleshoe, take Highway 214 S 20 miles. Go W on Caliche Road for 2.25 miles to Refuge Headquarters. From Morton, take Highway 214 N 18 miles. Go W on Caliche Road 2.25 miles.
Primary Wildlife: Lesser sandhill cranes.
Habitat: 5,809 acres consisting of shortgrass prairie with scattered mesquite and three sink-type lakes (no outlets), dependent entirely on runoff for water. Periodically dry.
Recreation and Education: Wildlife observation, study, and photography. Picnic area, camping area, and nature trail are located near headquarters. The Visitor Center displays mounted birds and mammals common to the area.
Special Note: The refuge's shortgrass prairies are endemic to what much of the area was like before agricultural development.
