Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge
Directions: From Raton, take I-25 S to Maxwell, go N on NM State Highway 445 0.8 mile and W on NM State Highway 505 approximately 2.5 miles. Turn N at entrance sign (1.5 miles to headquarters).
Primary Wildlife: Nesting and feeding area for migratory birds, especially wintering waterfowl.
Habitat: Rolling grasslands, developed croplands, and storage reservoirs.
Recreation and Education: Wildlife observation, hiking in most areas by permit, and sport fishing during summer months.
Special Note: Waterfowl concentrations during winter months attract many bald eagles to the area.
