Matagorda Island State Park
Matagorda Island State Park Overview
By

Matagorda has come a long way since 1942 when low-flying B-52s screamed over regularly and dropped their loads. These days, if a confused Cessna pilot lands illegally on the overgrown airstrip, irritated park rangers will walk the entire 8,000-foot concrete slab searching for broken least tern eggs a federal offense. The endangered birds love nesting in the cement cracks.
The other use for the deteriorating airstrip and the semi-paved roads abandoned by the air base is off-road biking, the best way to explore the skinny island's 38 miles of empty beaches, dune ridges and barrier flats. Either borrow a single-speed cruiser from the visitors center or lug your own wheels with you on the pedestrian ferry that crosses Espiritu Santo Bay from Port O'Connor, the only access to the uninhabited island (Thursday through Sunday, morning departures from the Texas Parks and Wildlife office at 16th and Maple, afternoon returns; reservations, 512-983-2215).
