Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area Overview
In 1941, damming of the Columbia River as part of the Columbia River Basin project created a 130-mile long lake. Named for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the lake is now the largest recreation feature in the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. The man-made recreation area provides opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, camping, hiking and tours of Fort Spokane and the Dam.
Operating Hours, Seasons:
Always open. The recreation season is May through October.
Fees, Costs, Rates:
No entrance fee.
Reservations/Permits:
Permits for fishing and hunting are available. Off-road vehicle use is prohibited. No reservations are accepted for campsites. Fees are charged for all 18 vehicle access campgrounds.
Facilities And Opportunities
Acreage: 100,390.31, all federal.
Visitor Center/Exhibits: Open daily during the summer and intermittently the rest of the year. Grand Coulee Dam Visitor Center is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years day.
Lodging and Camping Facilities: No reservations for $10/night camp sites at Kettle Falls, Evans, Fort Spokane, Spring Canyon, Keller Ferry, Hunters, Marcus Island, Gifford, and Porcupine Bay. For camping outside the Recreation Area, contact the Chamber of Commerce, Grand Coulee, Washington 99133, telephone 509-633-0361.
Food/Supplies: During the summer, meals are served at Spring Canyon Campground and Seven Bays Marina. Food and supplies are available at the marinas.
Other Concessions/NPS-Managed Visitor Facilities and Opportunities: Facilities include picnic areas, boat ramps, boat and trailer dump stations, drinking water, bath house and ferry service. Rental boats are available at Keller Ferr, Fort Spokane, and Kettle Falls from concessionaires.
Accessiblity: Most areas are accessible.
Recommended Activities/Park Use:
Water skiing, boating, bird watching, picnicing, audio-visual program, interpretive talks and exhibits, fishing, hunting. Off-road vehicle use is prohibited.
