The 581,000-acre John Muir Wilderness is the largest wilderness in California. It is named after the prominent naturalist and environmentalist. The wilderness is located in prime central Sierra Nevada, and it is the most visited wilderness in the state. Characterized by snow-capped mountains and hundreds of alpine lakes and streams, elevations within the wilderness range from 4,000 feet to more than 14,000 feet. The John Muir and Pacific Crest Trails traverse the area. Summer thunderstorms are common, and it may snow at any time. Firewood is scarce above 9,000 feet. Stock feed is limited. Permits to visit the area are required. Quotas are in effect for the entire Sierra National Forest portion from the last Friday in June through September 15th. Quotas are also in effect for trails into Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Parks and for overnight travel on the east side trails on the Inyo National Forest from the last Friday in June through September 15th. Reservations are advised.
