Hurricane Creek Wilderness Overview

Located in the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest in Arkansas.

This wilderness area covers 15,177 acres in Newton and Johnson Counties, Arkansas. Located approximately 40 miles north of Russellville, AR, elevations surpass 2,200 feet on the highest ridges. The area is characterized by upland oak-hickory hardwood forest, sandstone bluffs, and the famed Hurricane Creek that runs through the middle of the area. The Ozark Highlands Trail, (OHT) a 155-mile-long distance hiking trail, crosses the area in a 19.5-mile, southwest-northeast path.

Directions: From Interstate 40 at Clarksville, take State Highway 123 north about 40 miles to the Big Piney Trailhead, where the OHT enters the wilderness.
