Huleia National Wildlife Refuge (Kauai)
Directions: Viewing at Huleia Refuge is best accomplished from the Menehune (Alekoko) Fish Pond overlook along Hulemalu Road out of Nawiliwili, or from Haiku and Ahina Roads off Hulemalu Road W of Puhi Road. Only cooperating grazers are allowed to enter the refuge.
Primary Wildlife: The largest population of Koloa (Hawaiian ducks) is found on Kauai. The refuge protects the endangered Koloa (Hawaiian duck), Hawaiian gallinule, Hawaiian coot, and the Hawaiian stilt.
Habitat: 238 acres of seasonally flooded river bottom land, Huleia River estuary, and lush, wooded slopes of the Huleia River Valley on the southeastern side of Kauai.
Recreation and Education: Research projects may be conducted on site upon approval in writing by the refuge manager.
