Hiking - Hole in the Ground Mountain Trail

The trail follows the ridge line of Hole in the Ground Mountain. It offers views of the Petit Jean River Valley to the north and the Jack Creek Drainage to the south. Surrounding pine and hardwood forests provide opportunities for viewing deer, squirrel and black bear (highest density in Arkansas). Rugged, steep terrain is normal; geologic formations are abundant. Jack Creek Campground (trailhead) offers free developed camping, picnicking, and swimming. Jack Creek and Sugar Creek offer fishing and seasonal Class III white water. A short day hike on the Hole in the Ground Mountain Trail allows visitors to explore exciting outdoor opportunities.

Other Opportunities: Jack Creek Campground, Sugar Creek, Jack Creek, Buck Ridge Rifle Range, Dry Creek Wilderness, Jack Creek Overlook Trail, Sugar Creek Hiking Trail, and Hogan Mountain Walk-in Turkey Hunting Area.

Length: 3.6 miles one-way

Directions: From Booneville go south on Hwy. 23 for 2 miles, turn left on Hwy. 116 for 1 mile, go right on County Road 19 for 6 miles, then take a right on Forest Service Road 141 for 1 mile to Jack Creek Recreation Area.

Trail Information: Unsurfaced. Trail marked with white rectangles. Travel time is 2.5 hours one-way.

Site Amenities: Water available at Jack Creek Campground, which is open mid-May to mid-September.

Safety: Wear proper clothing for the season. Wear footwear suitable for mountain hiking. Hike with a partner and tell others where you are going. Be prepared to wade Sugar Creek during high water periods.

Difficulty Level: Most difficult

Requirements: Foot traffic only! Please register at the station near Jack Creek Recreation Area.

Recommended Seasons: Spring and Fall
