Grulla National Wildlife Refuge
Directions: From Portales, NM, take Highway 88 to Arch, NM. The Refuge is a few miles E of Arch next to the NM/TX State Line.
Primary Wildlife: Lesser sandhill cranes and shorebirds.
Habitat: The Refuge controls 3,236 acres, two thirds of which are saline lake bed, and the remainder, grasslands.
Recreation and Education: Hiking, wildlife observation.
Special Note: The Refuge salt lake provides a good example of an unaltered saline playa lake.
