Grayson Highlands State Park
Grayson Highlands State Park Highlights
- Spend Friday night at the Fox Hill Inn in Marion, Virginia, and wake to fresh coffee, blueberry pancakes, and a sunrise view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. On Saturday, summit 5,729-foot Mount Rogers, Virginia’s highest point.
- Saddle up to ride the 67-mile Virginia Highlands Horse Trail, which runs from VA 600 at Elk Garden to VA 94 not far from Ivanhoe, Virginia. The trail is blazed with orange paint and orange plastic diamonds. You can rent horses at the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, which has campgrounds especially for horse owners.
- About seven miles of trails here are open to mountain bikers (as well as horseback riders, so share the trail!). A good network of loops and side trails keep things interesting without ever getting too technical. Several outfitters in Damascus, Virginia, offer rentals and shuttle services. Bikers will also enjoy the 35-mile Virginia Creeper Trail, a multiuse rail-trail that offers a fun cruise from Abingdon to near Whitetop on the Virginia-North Carolina state line.
- Camp out for several nights at the Thomas Knob Shelter, the perfect basecamp from which to explore Grayson Highlands State Park and the Lewis Fork Wilderness Area. Highlights include the blooms at Rhododendron Gap each June, a half-mile-long side trail to the summit of Mount Rogers, and access to the Appalachian Trail.
- Enjoy some good old Appalachian bluegrass at the local festivals and fiddlers’ conventions held throughout the year. The Grayson Highlands Fall Festival takes place the last weekend in September, with live bluegrass, a wild pony auction, and some diet-busting country cooking.
