Galapagos Guide: Snorkeling

Galapagos Highlights

  • Watch for the islands' distinctive wildlife to take its act to the water. Snorkelers swim alongside diving birds and penguins, marine iguanas, and raucous packs of sea lions, not to mention the sharks, rays, and endangered sea turtles that congregate here.
  • Practice, practice, practice: Snorkeling in the Galapagos is not for the uninitiated. Water temperatures can drop as low as 60 degrees, visibility ranges from 10 to 50 feet, and rough ocean conditions and strong currents are common.
  • Stay local. Santa Cruz has great snorkeling all around the island. One of the most easily accessible spots can be found off Playa Mansa in Tortuga Bay, just a short walk from town.
