Val-Kill

Val-Kill Cottage was the only house Eleanor Roosevelt ever owned. "The greatest thing I have learned is how good it is to come home again," she once told a friend. Eleanor's modest home, now the Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site, is operated by the National Park Service. Adjacent to Springwood at the FDR National Historic Site, it is open to the public on a seasonal basis.

Under a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service, the Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill operates out of Stone Cottage, adjacent to Val-Kill Cottage. The Center is a non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to Eleanor Roosevelt's belief in bringing together diverse perspectives for the betterment of the human condition.

No lodging or camping is available at the FDR or Eleanor Roosevelt sites or at the Vanderbilt Mansion. A wide variety of hotels, motels, and camping sites are available in the area. For information call Dutchess County Tourism. Shopping, restaurants, and grocery stores are available in Hyde Park.
