Daniel Boone National Forest Guide: Climbing
Daniel Boone National Forest Highlights
- The sandstone cliffs of Eastern Kentucky are a major draw for rock climbers. The Daniel Boone National Forest has 3,000 miles of cliff lines.
- The Red River Gorge is the epicenter of climbing here. Be aware that the area is closely managed by the National Forest Service, and they expect you to know the latest openings and closures of areas in the gorge.
- More than 1,800 routes on 144 rock walls have been laid out in the Red River Gorge. Most of them are off of Kentucky 715 or Chimney Top Road.
- Climbs run the gamut in difficulty. The technical climbs, extending 50 to 100 feet, ascend rock faces. No climbing is allowed near Grays Arch, Sky Bridge, or Chimney Top Rock.
- Some of the most popular routes are Mr. Bungle, a 5.8+ in the Grays Flat region, as well as C Sharp or B Flat, rated 5.7, in the Natural Bridge region.
