Crowley's Ridge State Park

Left as an erosional remnant from the natural forces of rivers long ago, Crowley's Ridge stands 100 to 200 feet above the fertile plains of the Delta of eastern Arkansas. The ridge was named for Benjamin F. Crowley, a soldier during the War of 1812 who later began the first settlement in this part of the state. Crowley's Ridge forms a narrow arc of scenic rolling hills extending from the northeast corner of Arkansas in upper Clay County to the Mississippi River at Helena.

Located near Walcott in lower Greene County at the site of Benjamin Crowley's old homesite and burial place, Crowley's Ridge State Park is situated on western slopes of the ridge amid stately pines and hardwoods. Once a campground for the Quapaw Indians, this park, with its spring-fed lakes, shaded picnic and camping areas, and dogwood-studded nature trails, stands as a fitting tribute to the man whose courage and industry opened this area for settlement. Established as a state park in 1933 by land dedication and purchase, the park was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Today, those original native stone and wood structures create a setting of rustic serenity among the natural surroundings.

Facilities

Housekeeping Cottages - Two modern duplex housekeeping cottages (4 units) all with fireplaces (fireplaces for seasonal use only - October 1 through April 1) are nestled in the woods a short distance above the swimming area. Cottage units include all electric kitchens with cooking utensils and tableware. Linens are provided and cottages are heated and air-conditioned for year-round comfort. Units sleep up to 6 persons with the exception of one unit, which is barrier-free and sleeps only four. Woodburning fireplaces and privacy fenced picnic tables and grills make these cottages the perfect place for a weekend or a weeklong "get-away."

Group Lodging - Overlooking the fishing lake are five rustic, air-conditioned group cabins with a modern (heated and air-conditioned) bathhouse. These combine with a large and fully equipped cooking and dining hall to provide one of the state's most sought-after group outing facilities. For a modest fee, everything needed to accommodate groups of up to 60 is furnished except linens, pillows, covers, cookware, and tableware. Larger groups can be handled in the dining hall on a day-use basis. A large open pavilion in the area rounds out this outstanding group camp. (Early reserving of this popular facility is suggested.)

Camping - Year-round camping is available in a secluded area among the tall trees. Eighteen campsites with water and electricity, a modern bathhouse, and ample room for tent campers provide for an enjoyable camping experience.

Other Facilities - Hospitals, restaurants, and complete shopping are just minutes away in nearby towns.

NOTE: Cottage and group facility reservations can be made by calling or writing the park; early reservations are suggested. Campers must register at the Visitor Center before occupying a site. All sites are assigned; limited reservations available.

Recreation

Main Service Center - A massive log and stone structure built by the CCC houses the park's main recreation facilities. A dance pavilion, snack bar, and bathhouse form a backdrop for one of the state's most popular swimming areas (lifeguards on duty). Visitors can refresh themselves in the cool, spring-fed waters of the lake or relax in the sun on the sandy beach. A portion of the lake has been sectioned off for those who wish to glide peacefully in pedal boats that are available for rent near the main service building. A playground adjacent to the swimming beach completes the variety of facilities found in this area of the park.

Fishing - The 30-acre fishing lake may look small but it offers a chance at trophy-size largemouth bass or channel catfish. The new barrier-free fishing pier offers everyone a chance to land a record. A boat launch ramp allows easy access to the lake. (Electric motors only on the lake.)

Fishing boats and canoes, located near the boat ramp, are available for rent at the Visitor Center.

Activities - "Let's play ball" can be heard from near the lake. Hours of sporting fun take place on the ball field during impromptu games or organized group gatherings. More than 3 1/2 miles of hiking trails meander through the beautiful forest of Crowley's Ridge allowing you to view some of the most unique flora and fauna found in the state.

Picnicking - Coupled with the scenic beauty of the Ridge in all seasons, the family picnic areas with large (rental) pavilions conveniently located for group use, help rank this park among the most visited in the state. The group pavilions must be reserved at the Visitor Center before being used (deposit required).
