Crater Lake National Park Guide: Biking

Crater Lake National Park Highlights

  • Crater Lake National Park offers an epic ride around the 33-mile Rim Drive. With steep hills at high elevation, the ride is challenging but offers spectacular scenery. Start from the park headquarters area and ride clockwise around the lake. This direction puts one of the steepest and longest grades at the beginning of the trip.
  • Don’t forget your helmet; it is required. Cyclists face many hazards, including high speeds on steep downhill sections. Only cyclists experienced at riding with auto traffic should consider biking at Crater Lake, as park roads seldom have shoulders.
  • Plan your hydration ahead of time—water is available at Rim Village and Park Headquarters.
  • Two campgrounds are available for cyclists: Mazama Campground, open from mid-June to early October, and Lost Creek Campground, open from mid-July to mid-September.
  • Bicycles are not permitted on park trails. For mountain biking, the Grayback Drive provides eight miles of unpaved, one-way road.
