Clearwater National Forest Guide: Paddling
Clearwater National Forest Highlights
- Float the Lochsa River early in the season, when snowmelt turns this wild and scenic gem into Class III-IV+ whitewater.
- Three sources feeding multiple pools help make Jerry Johnson Hot Springs popular with locals and day-trippers from nearby Missoula, Montana. The pools are a one-mile hike from the bridge at mile-marker 152 on Highway 12.
- Avoid the crowds at Jerry Johnson by heading to the hotter, more-secluded Weir Hot Spring at mile-marker 142 on Highway 12. The half-mile trail begins on the north side of the road, following Weir Creek upstream from its confluence with the Lochsa.
- The North Fork of the Clearwater is a less-frequented, but equally stunning big-water destination. The upper run between Cedar and Kelly Forks campgrounds has some Class IVV highlights, but ends on a mellow note in a deep, scenic gorge.
- Bring your fly rod to the North Fork's Kelly Forks area and hike up the adjoining Kelly Creek for some of the region's best trout fishing.
