Chugach National Forest Guide: Scenic Drives
Chugach National Forest Highlights
- Be sure to explore the spur road to Portage Lake at the southern end of Turnagain Arm where Alder Pond, two miles in on the right side of the road, reflects Explorer Glacier beautifully.
- The 300-foot-tall face of Childs Glacier looms at the end of a 52-mile drive out of Cordova. The road ends at the impassable Million Dollar Bridge, which spanned the mighty Copper River until the 1964 earthquake.
- To get up close and personal with a glacier, visit Exit Glacier outside of Seward. Walk the easy 0.8-mile loop or hike the strenuous 3.5 miles up the Harding Icefield Trail for a bird’s-eye view of a massive ice field.
- Visit the village of Hope at the end of the Hope Highway on the Kenai Peninsula. Watch for belugas, fish Resurrection Creek, or drive to the end of the road and hike five miles to Gull Rock. Drive the gravel Skilak Lake Loop Road off the Sterling Highway for beautiful views, several campgrounds, and the chance to see grouse, moose, and bears.
- What would an Alaskan road trip be without some time afloat? “Drive” the Alaska Marine Highway ferry route between Whittier and Valdez to see 100 miles of rugged beauty in Prince William Sound.
