Ashdown Gorge Wilderness Area
Located in the Dixie National Forest Utah.
The Ashdown Gorge Wilderness Area is 6,750 acres of gorgeous forest and meadows. The area is locate southeast of Cedar City, Utah, adjacent to and west of Cedar Breaks National Monument. Many of the red limestone formations of the park can be seen from areas within the Wilderness Area. Elevations range from 8,000 to 10,400 feet.
The area was formed through faulting and the eroding of multi-colored Wasatch limestone. A significant stand of Bristlecone Pine known as the Twisted Forest is located in the northern corner of the wilderness. The Bristlecone is one of the oldest living trees known to man and many of the trees which exist within the wilderness were living during the time of Christ.
Mule deer, Stellar's Jays, Clark's nutcrackers, yellow-bellied marmots, chipmunks, golden-mantled ground squirrels, voles, and mice are just a few of the many different species in the Ashdown Gorge Wilderness Area.
Trails
RattlesnakeTrail - (5 miles) - Follow Highway #143 to the north end of Cedar Breaks National Monument. Trail is just outside of the park.
Potato Hollow Trail - (2.5 miles) - From US Highway #14, east of Cedar Canyon Campground, then turn on Forest Road 301. Follow it until it ends at Crystal Springs Trailhead.
Note: This Wilderness receives its most concentrated use during the fall hunting season.
